2023 DENTON Estate Chardonnay
2023 DENTON Estate Chardonnay
SOIL TYPE Granite/ Granitic Loam
ASPECT North-East
VINEYARD Our 2023 Chardonnay draws mostly from Block 6, where the B95 clone runs down the northeast slope toward the winery. This is Chardonnay country - gentle morning light, sheltered from the harsh afternoon sun. For the first time, we added a splash of close-planted Gingin from Block 4 (nestled beside View Hill House) to add a little extra texture and richness this year.
VINIFICATION The fruit was picked at the end of March. 90% was destemmed, then wild fermentation was left to run its course naturally - with a light touch throughout. The wine was pressed off skins and aged in three 500L puncheons-one of them new-for contemplative maturation through the year. Bottled late 2023 without fining or filtration.
VINTAGE A cool, wet spring rolled into a dry, mild January - prime conditions for Chardonnay. The long, steady ripening meant we could hang the fruit just long enough to get flavour and acid in perfect sync. Our job was to stay patient, stay vigilant and do only what was needed.
“A bright green gold. Opulent and complex aromas ripe stone fruits, ginger, oyster shells and scented white flowers. Concentrated and structured on the palate, finishing saline, nutty and dry long.” 96 points - Phillip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion.
