2021 DENTON Estate Nebbiolo
2021 DENTON Estate Nebbiolo
SOIL TYPE Granite/ Granitic Loam
ASPECT North-West
VINEYARD Nebbiolo is our thing. Approx five hectares are planted to six clones across the hill...a total of 12,584 vines today (but who’s counting?) The main block sits halfway up the northwestern slope on Block 2A, soaking up all the sun it can, essential for Nebbiolo’s long, slow ripening arc. In 2021, the fruit came in just right: balanced, layered and full of promise.
VINIFICATION The fruit was destemmed and fermented with wild yeast, spending 12 days on skins with regular plunging and foot stomping to build structure and extract colour. No temperature control just a natural, slow ferment. After pressing, the wine was transferred to 500-litre French oak puncheons (20% new), where it remained for 18 months before bottling without fining or filtration.
VINTAGE The 2021 season was mild and measured - ideal for Nebbiolo, which needs plenty of hang time on the vine. A long, steady ripening period delivered fruit with depth, detail - and that fine tannin line we look for. Seems 2021 ’twas the season for Nebb.
“A Bright medium garnet. Perfumed and poised on the nose with its bouquet of morello cherries, red plums, dried flowers, tobacco and orange zest. even better on the medium bodied and very persistent palate. Textured and long finishing with very fine, polished tannins.” 97 points, Phillip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion
